Before you go

  • Ask about allergens when you order: US food law names nine major allergens (milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soy and sesame), and kitchens can tell you which dishes contain them.
  • Restaurant inspection results are kept by the city or county health department; many publish them online or post the latest grade at the door.
  • For table service a tip of 15โ€“20% is customary; at counter-service places tipping is optional.

Bring a pillow if you prefer being comfortable sitting on flimsy bistro chairs. Otherwise, prepare for a treat. An authentic fusion French-Japanese restaurant seems an odd combination, but it works remarkably well. There are relatively few main courses to select from, chicken, duck, baby lamb chops and others, but this is a good thing because theyโ€™re all cooked to perfection. As for the Japanese selection of sushi and sashimi thatโ€™s unusually broad. The space itself is intimate, meaning small, and not grand, but itโ€™s the food that counts and thatโ€™s exceptional. We had the fluffy Japanese style cheesecake and Belgium flourless chocolate cake which was served warm. Both were excellent. Highly recommended too was the duck and the lamb. This is a donโ€™t miss restaurant. And did I mention, itโ€™s reasonably priced. You seldom encounter that these days.

This place is a relaxing spot for sushi after a long day. The atmosphere is incredibly calm, and the decor is beautiful. While the sushi isnโ€™t the best Iโ€™ve ever had, itโ€™s still enjoyable and a great local spot. I particularly loved the steak. The service was great and quick.

One of the best sushi experiences in NJ! Chef Nelson is an artist in presentation and a master at combining flavors to highlight phenomenal fish and other ingredients. We had the best birthday celebration here and cannot recommend it enough. Service was spectacular, always attentive but never intrusive. Really one of my favorite restaurants! The seafood is so fresh and the Wagyu is buttery. Thank you, Chef and the entire Wasai team for a wonderful meal!

Wasai Bistro is the textbook definition of hidden gem. The wife and I were passing through the area when we decided to have some sushi. Luckily, we picked the best spot in town. The sushi was absolutely delicious and fresh. Comparable and perhaps better than any sushi we've had anywhere. However the reason why we won't ever forget Wasai is due to it's duck & mushroom risotto. It was, hands down, the best risotto we've had. It was so good we ordered one to take back home to Pennsylvania. This lovely spot is a must visit if you're passing through; actually, it's a must if you're within reasonable driving distance. We're looking forward to our next drive through *checks notes* Cranford, NJ.
